Would you let your child travel
alone in a foreign land?
Years ago, kids were happy playing in their neighborhood and using the family phone to talk to their friends. Today, cell phones and social media give children access to a digital world much larger and more complex than the world parents are familiar with. Without parental oversight, it's like letting a child travel alone in a foreign land. Education, engagement and tools are the keys to helping parents protect their children in the digital world.
Kids use the internet differently than their parents. Parents most often use the web for information and research. On the other hand, their kids are essentially studying a "second language" and primarily use the web to express themselves and connect with their peers. This self-generated content forces immature minds to make decisions. Some make permanent decisions to temporary problems.
If Facebook were a country, it would be the fourth largest in the world. When our kids were young, we would never allow them to play without an adult within earshot or travel in our community alone. Today, very engaged parents allow their kids to be connected everywhere all the time through cell phones, social networking and gaming products. These outlets open the door to predators and bullies and to teens' poor decisions facing a worldwide audience.
Parents want and need their children to be a part of the digital world for many social, educational and practical reasons. Yet most parents are not educated in dealing with the new issues of the digital world that affect their children - cyberbullying, sexting, and online predators. Today, 33% of kids will be cyberbullied and only 4 in 10 will tell a parent. Twenty-two percent of girls and 18% of boys will send a nude photo of themselves. Sixty-three percent of teens are asked to meet offline by someone they have never met in their life.
While technology has opened up a whole new world of communication for children, it comes with several risks. If you are considering allowing your child to travel in the digital world, make sure you are packed to travel with them. If your child is already traveling there, making sure you know their online friends and how they met can protect your child from the dangers of the digital world.
Chantaine Bulluck educates parents about keeping children safe in the digital world. More information about group workshops and personal education sessions can be found at WeKeepKidzafe.com or by contacting Ms. Bulluck at 256-797-8968 or wekeepkidzafe@usa.com.

Meet Kimberly!
This issue's featured sitter is Kimberly Stoutner who has been with Rocket City Sitters for a year and a half. Kimberly first learned about Rocket City Sitters when searching for a job that worked around her schedule and that would allow her to make some extra money without putting her daughter in daycare.
Besides working for Rocket City Sitters, Kimberly loves painting on canvas, playing classical guitar, cooking, working in the yard, swimming, photography, reading, writing fiction, and, most recently, taking classes at Dance Trance. However, she says "nothing compares with spending time with my family." Kimberly's husband, daughter, two cats and two dogs make for a supportive and fun family! In addition to being a mother of a three year old girl, Kimberly has experience as a substitute teacher and has babysat for numerous families with children of all ages.
Rocket City Sitters families love that Kimberly is mature and trustworthy, making her one of our most requested sitters.
"Thanks so much for providing Kimberly to help out with Evan and Lexi this weekend. We had an absolute blast at my reunion and Kimberly's help made it possible! Please tell her how much we enjoyed her kind, patient and fun assistance! Evan really liked her and we did, too!" - Angela M., mother of two
To schedule Kimberly, or another one of our experienced sitters, call us at 256-272-1727.
